Debt charities ready for tough New Year
(21 December 2005)

Debt charities are reportedly gearing up for an inundation of phone calls from despairing consumers as soon as the Christmas period is over.

The thud of credit card bill upon doormat will be mirrored in the ringing of phones at organisations such as the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) and the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), as thousands of hearts sink when they realise just how much they have eaten into their credit over December.

Speaking to This is Money, a CCCS spokeswoman – whose group expects 20,000 calls in January - illustrated the likely pattern of events.

She said: "The calls get a little depressed in December because people are spending, but they go through the roof in the New Year. We think it will be as busy as last year, if not even busier."

With Grant Thornton recently suggesting that 6,500 of the likely 20,000 new personal insolvencies during the first quarter of 2006 will come as a direct result of Christmas debts, it would seem that 'tis the season to be careful.

Only four days to go, then, but there's still time to take out a pre-Christmas payday loan and ensure that the only phone calls you make in early January will be those wishing friends and relatives a happy New Year.

You can pick up a same-day cash advance of between £80 and £1,000, which will be repayable as soon as you're paid and not leave you with medium or long-term uncertainties or the nasty surprises held by hidden costs and charges.
