Festive consumers relaxed about online dangers
(14 December 2005)

Brits are using the internet, and therefore their credit and debit cards, more and more in order to purchase the ideal festive gift – but are largely unaware of the risks involved.

While each day will see £150 million spent on online Christmas gifts this year, Mastercard has shown that 62 per cent of us believe that fraud is something that happens to other people.

Two in five didn't even know whether they had fallen victim to online fraud in the past, even though the average amount lost in such instances is £680.

Brian Morris, head of advanced payments product delivery at Mastercard Europe, said: "It is important that people remind themselves of some of the basic security measures they can take when it comes to shopping online.

"Consumers should keep their card details to themselves and keep track of where and what they have spent online."

It may be tempting to confine yourself to card purchases this Christmas – especially if cash is tight. But a payday loan may solve that problem in the short-term and allow you the run of the high street, providing far greater security when it comes to seeing how much money you are spending and mixing up the means by which you spend.

Repayable when your payslip comes through, it's a handy and controllable way to ensure that you can complete your festive purchases while knowing exactly how your finances stand.
