Oldies splashing out more on beauty products

Youngsters spend less than their over-45 peers when it comes to shelling out for beauty and personal care products.

So reveals a survey by Datamonitor, which says that consumers aged over 45 spend £30 more on personal care items than those of a younger age and states that the average sum spent by this age group on such items is £123.

This might change the focus of a market worth a total of £2.5 billion, according to Datamonitor consumer markets analyst Daniel Bone.

He said: "Today's mature consumers are taking active steps to reduce the physical manifestations of ageing and this is a wake-up call for the industry, which too often overlooks the mature market.

"They are more experimental than ever and are more willing to pay premium for products with proven functionality…Mature consumers represent the most important personal care consumer group in the coming years."
