Research from Lloyds TSB insurance found that the diminutive iPod Nano is high on many people's stocking filler want lists, with over a quarter of those surveyed saying that they would like to find the mp3 player in the morning.

Other expensive items, such tickets to see Robin Williams at Wembley, the Playstation Portable, an engagement ring and a Blackberry personal information manager were all popular amongst interviewees.

Lloyds TSB recommended that customers are careful of their goods during Christmas, making sure that the season does not become a festival for burglars as well as for the family.

"For some, Christmas can end in tears when Santa isn't the first visitor to arrive carrying a sack. With burglars on the prowl it's doubly important to make sure doors and windows are locked tight whenever your home is empty," said Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB insurance.
